Scanning sucked, no doubt, but you didn't actually have to do very much of it. I scanned only the rich planets from the first four clusters and ended up with enough resources to complete all the research in the game.

I agree with you about Tuchanka; I was disappointed that there was no vehicular segment. I had hoped that when we took the truck from the Urdnot camp to the hospital it would turn into something like the Mako segments on Feros or Noveria from ME1, but instead it just drops you right at the entrance to the hospital.

I should correct, I played ME1 on an XBox 360. Not the original vanilla XBox.

I just finished ME2 myself. The mining minigame was maddening and quite boring. I miss the Mako missions and just bought ME1 for the PC so I could play them again (played ME1 on XBox the first time). ME2 also just felt smaller than the first, but that may have been the fact that you don't see anything except the mission maps. Again, going back to the Mako.

I also felt that the mission "hubs" were much smaller in ME2 and didn't feel as big as in the original. ME1 Citadel vs. ME2 Citadel was a night and day difference. Tuchanka was a huge disappointment. An entire planet covered in ruined cities and all I get to explore in force is a re-purposed hospital and a town square full of dead bodies? Tuchanka just begged for a Mako mission. Heck, Tuchanka would make a perfectly good game all by itself.

Still, ME2 is an awesome game. I don't regret buying it at all. I'll even recommend the thing.

Great review. I'm 28 hours into the game and the only thing I now regret is that your Shepard on that website wasn't available when I looked through it before I started playing.

Personally I think the planet exploration minigame is both a step forward and a step back from the Mass effect 1 version. With the second game actually having use for the resources, driving around to find them all would be a disastrously huge time sink. However, the Mako was just more fun than running the mouse cursor over the planet scanner until you pick up every worthwhile blip of resources.
